Unravelling the Australian healthcare system

As clinicians, our early development and perspectives focus on the extremely important and complex minutia of clinical care. We see the whole healthcare system through a series of narrow lenses which relate to the immediate clinical problem and our ability to navigate with our patients through complex and frequently frustrating processes over which we have limited control.

This course is designed to provide a "helicopter" view of the current healthcare system
- Who does it serve?
- Who funds and delivers care?
- How is the workforce trained and distributed?
- How does this all affect the consumers of healthcare at the point of care?

PriMeD Focus

PriMeD Focus is a free subscription program that provides Australian doctors and medical students with a selection of education units from the extensive PriMeD range.

This month, the PriMeD Focus is:

Understanding occupational stressors

Drug treatment in a young person, newly diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease

Practicing safely - Assessing risk in antenatal care

To minimise the risk and impact of workplace stress, it is important to understand how occupational stressors arise. Let's look at the way that work is organised and the way that people are managed as contributing factors for occupational stress.

Treating a newly diagnosed, young person with Parkinson's disease can offer many challenges. This unit takes you through a typical patient presentation addressing the issue of how to begin treatment and some possible pharmacological options available.

This unit provides a list of common and serious complications of pregnancy, as well as an approach to assessing a woman's risk during her antenatal period.
